Here With Me

I see you standing there. People walking around you. I see you smile and respond when asked a question, like everything is fine. But the minute they walk away, your face changes, the smile fades, your shoulders droop, like the weight of the world is hanging on you.

I see that look in your eyes…

Loneliness.

The haunting questions of the heart – does anyone see me? Does anyone really know me? Does anyone want to? I feel alone. Will I always be alone? Even surrounded by people who love me, does anyone really understand who I am? Am I too much this and not enough that?

Wherever we go, in every situation, no matter how many people we have in our lives who love and care about us, there will always be deep, lonely places in our hearts that no one can see.

No one except Jesus.

There is a reason His name is Emmanuel – God With Us. (Matthew 1:23)

Ever since that dark day in the Garden of Eden, when intimacy with God and one another was severed with a bite, loneliness has been a constant part of every life. We are lonely. We need connection, to belong. We long to be known, understood, valued, seen.

And Jesus meets that need with Himself.

Jesus promises, “I am with you always. I will never leave you, nor forsake you.” (Matthew 28:20, Hebrews 13:5)

What a relief to a lonely heart to lean into that promise, that truth! The God whose birth we are about to celebrate is the One who comforts and satisfies the deepest loneliness we feel.

I am not all alone. God is here with me.

I think that this is so honest and real and true. I have had times of such deep loneliness like what is said here. The only ONE Who can heal that is the Master Healer Himself. Loneliness is meant to drive us to Him.
