PARTICIPANT'S GUIDE FOR COMMUNITY GROUP GATHERINGS
Sermon: Orphan Sunday [Week One] "Seek Justice and Do Right" - October 18th, 2015
Series: True Religion
Speaker: Pastor Anthony Orzo

Main Passage: Isaiah 1:10-17

Referenced Passages: 2 Timothy 3:5; James 1:27

Launching Question: Take a few moments to share with the group how “in the know” you feel you are regarding the church’s orphan ministry. Are there any ways you feel we can better communicate this priority to you?

Sermon Questions:

1. Our talk this week was from the Book of Isaiah. Isaiah was a prophet and prophets are known for their firm words.

  • How does a passage like the one we read strike you?
  • Is there still a need for this kind of language in a Christian culture that increasingly steers away from these types of verbal corrections?
  • If so, please explain why? If not, please explain why?

2. What are some of the ways modern Christians choose “ritualistic worship” over an authentic relationship with God? Why do you think this was such a prevalent issue in the faith of Israel and still is in our modern Christian faith?

3. Isaiah makes a strong point that says, "a person genuinely worshipping God should be compelled to pursue the well being of others."

  • Why do you think this is true?
  • Why do you think Isaiah and Scripture at large emphasizes pursuing the well being of the orphan and widow?

4. Have you ever made the connection between being an adopted son, or daughter of God and caring for the orphan? How do you think having a deep understanding of your adoption in Jesus should shape how you understand the plight of the orphan?

5. Since genuine belief in God should always compel us to want to obey God—take some time as a group to discuss what, if any, “next steps" God is leading you to take in our Orphan Ministry at RCPO. Make sure you pay particular attention to the challenge in step 5 and have an honest discussion about whether, or not your group is truly engaged in consistent missional living in your community. If you need support in trying to figure that out, know our church is here to walk with you on that journey. We’d love to hear how so please let us know.

Here are some ways you can seek justice and do good at RCPO:

  1. Pray for God to move the heart of every person connected to our church and God’s global church--to plight of the orphan.
  2. Offer your particular skill to the Orphan Ministry.
  3. Give to the Orphan Fund.
  4. Adopt a Compassion Child.
  5. Consider getting in a Community Group to make a difference in your community.
