Primary Passages: 1 Corinthians 1:18-25

Launching Discussion: Have you ever thought of the cross of Jesus as a “controversial” element of the Easter story? Have you ever met someone who was OK with liking Jesus as a person, but not as the Son of God who died on the Cross?

Sermon Questions:

1. In 1 Cor. 1:18 Paul tells us some people will see the message of the Cross as foolishness. What do you think are some of the greatest obstacles keeping people from trusting in Jesus in our modern culture?

2. In 1 Cor. 1:19 Paul tells us that one of the reasons people were denying the message of the Cross (that Jesus lived, died for our sins, and was Resurrected to bring us new life in God) was because it was not fully compatible with their human reason.

  • Can you share a personal example with your group about a time you experienced a person who denied Jesus based on these grounds? How did you respond?

3. Do you agree with the statements that some people deny the Cross of Jesus because they are offended by: 1. The fact that Jesus said trusting in Him and his death for our sin is the only way to God and 2. To embrace the message of the Cross means we must constantly lay down our own motives and morals in life and pursue Jesus’ motives and morals in life? Please read the passage referenced in the sermon about power as a refresher before you answer this question.

In Matthew 20:25-28- Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

4. It was said in the sermon that, “Jesus’ Cross-has never been without skeptics, but it’s also never been without believers either.” Take a few minutes to share with your group a little of you faith story. It is likely you will not have the time to hear from everyone in one setting so try to make it a point to have everyone share some time over the next weeks.
