Launching Discussion: Has there ever been a time when you tried loving Jesus on your own terms or the terms of culture? If so, how does being a student of God’s Word help you to know who God really wants you to be? Please be specifc about how this means taking Jesus on His terms.

Sermon Questions:

1. Pastor Anthony’s first point was “To properly read the Bible you must know that hearing from God in His Word will always require you to do something for God in your life.” Is this the first time you’ve heard this truth? Please explain.

2. When looking at a teaching from James 1, Anthony said that “James warns us to guard our hearts against a common, but “false form” of religion, practiced by some people. The false faith he’s concerned with is when a person continually hears the truths of the Bible but has minimal or no desire to obey them.”

  • Was there ever a time when you got comfortable hearing God’s truths but never really re-oriented your life around them? If so, please explain why and how you realized this.

3. Since “genuine faith is not validated by what you hear from God’s word but by what you do with what you hear from God’s Word,” how can we help others to know this?

  • Do you find our culture misses the connection between hearing and obey God’s Word?
  • Why is this?

4. How does who we are in Jesus help us make this connection and get to the place where we obey God’s Word out of joy and love for Him?

5. In the second part of the talk, Pastor Anthony looked at the time we spend hearing and studying God’s Word in personal devotion, our Sunday gatherings and even in our Community Groups. He said that “the truth James is trying to get us to see is that we are missing the heart of our faith if we fail to connect the ‘doing dots’ to this concentrated time of hearing.”

  • Has there ever been a time where you didn’t connect the ‘doing dots’? If so, how come?
  • Since it’s easy to passively see these as times to just hear, how can what we hear from God compel us to do great things for Him?
  • What are some steps you can take to live in light of God’s truths, letting His Word shape how you live as a disciple?
